About Us

Bassai Karate Academy opened in 1986 under the direction of Sensei Bruce Barkalow.  Since that time Sensei Jerry Bomay, his instructors, and staff have formed one of the most honored and respected studios in Western Michigan.

As a result of Bassai’s dedication and commitment to first-class martial arts, the academy was appointed the position of “Directors of Kissaki-Kai Michigan” in 2000, by Sensei Vince Morris(9th Dan and head of Kissaki-Kai International.) and in 2016 was named Kissaki Kai USA headquarters.   Bassai Karate Academy has also been granted the honor of representing Team Caique in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Western Michigan.

Throughout the school’s existence Bassai has strived to provide quality martial arts to the Newaygo Community and beyond.  We believe that every individual should be able to experience the positive, life-changing benefits that martial arts training has to offer.

We invite you to come in and experience for yourself the powerful growth that Bassai Karate Academy has to offer.

What others are saying of us:

“I absolutely love being a member of Bassai Karate! It doesn’t matter how old or young you are, their is something for everyone who is looking to learn self defense, or just getting into shape. What better place to do either, or both, than in a fun, non-judgmental, family-friendly, open environment, where you can make friends while you work to improve your physical health”.  ~ Deborah Kay Enos

“Our 6 yr old son has been going to bassai for about 6 weeks now. I’ve been very impressed with their ability to work with younger kids. The discipline and learning ability kids that age show is incredible. I never would have thought they could teach so much to kids so young. Our son LOVES it — he had such fun and gets GREAT exercise. They mix karate skills with teaching values, and cardio through games that require focus and athletic skills. The monthly membership seems like a lot, until you calculate the daily price (if you choose to go every weekday). Highly recommend!” ~ Mary Brown.

“My children, ages 4, 5, and 8, have been taking lessons with Sensai Bomay for 4 months now. They enjoy the lessons, but Mr. Bomay is the real hidden gem. It’s hard to get 4 and 5 year old boys to focus on anything and my 5 year old is thriving. My 4 year old is challenging, but I have to say Mr. Bomay is the most patient and fair man you could imagine. An amazing place”.  ~  The Head Sheep

“My 14 year old daughter goes here for adult class place and instructors are great”. ~ Mathew Staffin
